Recently, I was asked to give a radio interview about some of the work that I do at Dana Wyss Healing Arts, as part of a larger series on holistic health and healing practices. In the interview, I describe how I work with clients who come to see me for my signature sessions blending movement and bodywork.

My goal in these sessions is to assist clients in moving well, inhabiting their bodies more fully, and accessing the wisdom, joy and vitality that arise with embodied mindfulness. I do this by designing individualized programs incorporating mindfulness meditation, yoga and other movement practices, breathwork education, bodywork and energywork as needed to release areas of restriction and retrain movement and breathing habits to support ease and well-being. If you or someone you know would like to know more, please listen, share, and contact me to discuss your needs and goals.

Here's a brief look at some of the unique services I offer, who I work with, and how this all came about it the first place. Hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as I enjoyed talking about my passion for helping others feel their very best!

Touch As Nutrition

What Is Your Touch Diet?

What do hugs, high fives and massage have in common?

They are all nutrients that make up our Touch Diet! Along with daily water intake, nutritious food, fresh air and movement, we all need healthy touch in order to thrive and feel safe and vital within our lives.

Touch benefits us by slowing our heart rates and lowering blood pressure, calming us quickly and enhancing our ability to think more clearly and make better decisions. Studies have shown that receiving touch improves subsequent performance in testing and competitions. Touch lowers the levels of stress hormones (such as cortisol) in our bodies, which has dynamic and far-ranging effects upon our overall health and our weight. Receiving touch encourages us to breathe more deeply and fully enter the moment, allowing us to enjoy our bodies and our lives as they are. Truly, touch benefits us all in myriad ways.

If your touch diet needs some "beefing up", book a massage today! I have later evening hours and limited Saturday availability to make it easier than ever for you to nourish yourself with touch. You can do so here: http://www.danawyss.com/

Below, I've included links to a few articles that I've found interesting about touch, how it benefits us to give and receive it, and how to incorporate more safe and healthy touch into our lives. I hope you enjoy them!

                               Happy February, dear clients!

I'm hoping that this finds you all well, breathing deeply and enjoying 2015. Check in with yourself right now - how is your body feeling? If you're noticing any tension in your neck and shoulders, take a few deep breaths and a few short moments to release that tension with this.

Now that you're feeling a little better, perhaps you'd like to know a bit about how massage affects the mind. If so, read up on that here!

And here, you can learn what Dr. Andrew Weil has to say about the benefits of massage. It'll make you feel even better about the time you spend on the table!

Has it been awhile since your last session? I now have later evening hours on Thursdays and Fridays, along with easy-peasy online booking, so log on and set your next appointment here. I look forward to helping you feel your best, very soon.

Have a great week! Be well, dear clients!

What's your ideal frequency?

How often should you be receiving massage?  It depends!

Often, clients and prospective clients want to know - how often should I receive massage, for greatest benefit? While I think if we all received massage once a week, we'd live in a different (and better) world, the answer varies a good bit. Since we're all dynamic beings who are constantly growing, changing and shifting, what worked best at one time may not be the best fit now. Below are some considerations to make when determining what your ideal frequency is at this time.

What are your goals? What are you hoping to gain from the investment of time, attention, resources and breath that you are making? If you are in a stress-filled phase of life and your goal is balance and stress-relief, a weekly or bi-weekly session can help you remain centered. If you're actively working to release long-held tension patterns in your body, receiving weekly sessions for several weeks will reinforce the work done in previous sessions and allow you to keep moving forward. If you currently have habits that don't support good posture or health, aren't willing or able to adopt new ones, but still want relief from chronic discomfort, a weekly massage can help you feel better for a time. If your lifestyle includes daily stretching, exercise, and movement practices that support your goals on the table, and if you're goal is stasis, a massage every 3 to 4 weeks can support you in that.

How long is your body maintaining results from your sessions? After your massage, your chronic neck and shoulder pain is...absent. For how long? If you're scheduling massage sessions every 3-4 weeks, but your neck pain is returning at week 2, it's a great idea to book several sessions closer together and ask your therapist for between-session tips (stretches and exercises) to help you maintain that pain-free state for longer and longer periods. You'll be re-training your body into a "new normal" while learning quick and easy ways to help yourself feel better on your own at home. Your body will respond and thank you for it. Don't spend 2 weeks in pain!

Regular Rewards!  Regular massage can provide enormous benefit to the body and the mind. And, it's also an investment. To make your regular treatments more accessible, I'm now offering Regular Rewards packages. Purchase 10 sessions, receive the 11th session free. Or, purchase 6 sessions and receive half off your 7th.

Whatever your ideal frequency, I'm grateful for the opportunity to support each of you in feeling better, breathing more fully, and moving well. Have a great week, and be well dear clients!

On Meeting Sensation

How are you meeting the sensations in your body?

When we receive massage, we have the rare opportunity to experience many sensations in the body, uninterrupted.  Pleasure, expansion, release, intensity, discomfort, fluttering, joy, sadness - these are just a few of the sensations that can arise within us during bodywork.  For most of us, it's rare to have dedicated time to explore our experience of being in these bodies.  How can you make the most of this time?
  • Honor silence.  It takes attention and curiosity to feel and follow the sensations in your body.  Allowing yourself to treat your massage time as sacred quiet space (even on occasion!) can evoke an entirely different experience from a massage filled with conversation.  If you tend to talk your way through a massage, consider spending one session, or even half a session (or 20 minutes!) in silent observation of what's happening in your system.
  • Breathe, breathe, breathe!  When we encounter something foreign or uncomfortable in our experience, our tendency is to hold our breath, to guard, to steel ourselves.  By doing this, we can lock muscular tension and difficult emotional states into our bodies.  We cannot go wrong by breathing more fully, breathing more freely, or breathing in a focused way.  Breath moves our stagnant places, opens our clenched places, and allows our emotions to flow and shift in healthy ways.  Also?  It's okay to breathe loudly, sigh, and even make noise on your exhale when getting a massage, if it helps you to release tension.  Don't be shy!  Breathe, and let your breath work for you.
  • Ask for what you need.  Need a change of music in order to relax?  Wishing for cooler temperatures, or prefer a heater on your table?  Would a sip of water help?  Just ask!  My goal is to create a space of comfort and peace so that you can fully enter your own experience.  Help me help you by asking for what you need.
  • Allow time to transition.   After your massage, do you immediately check your emails, voice messages, the news - before you even drive off?  Consider giving yourself a little time - even just the time it takes to return home - to enjoy the peaceful, timeless state that your massage placed you in.  Not only will all of your messages be waiting for you when you're ready for them, you'll be the one calm driver on the road!  Make the most of your bliss, dear clients.
  • Stay hydrated.  I know.  EVERY massage therapist says this, every time.  But that's because most of us are not adequately hydrated much of the time, and because it's so important!  You'll feel your best physically if you're hydrated before and after your massage, and some of you might notice that both your energy levels and emotions remain in better balance when you're soaked.  If none of that motivates you, just remember that hydrated skin = younger looking skin.  Drink up!
Wishing you each a full, flowing, healthy month!
Be well and breathe well, dear clients!
