How often should you be receiving massage? It depends!
Often, clients and prospective clients want to know - how often should I receive massage, for greatest benefit? While I think if we all received massage once a week, we'd live in a different (and better) world, the answer varies a good bit. Since we're all dynamic beings who are constantly growing, changing and shifting, what worked best at one time may not be the best fit now. Below are some considerations to make when determining what your ideal frequency is at this time.
What are your goals? What are you hoping to gain from the investment of time, attention, resources and breath that you are making? If you are in a stress-filled phase of life and your goal is balance and stress-relief, a weekly or bi-weekly session can help you remain centered. If you're actively working to release long-held tension patterns in your body, receiving weekly sessions for several weeks will reinforce the work done in previous sessions and allow you to keep moving forward. If you currently have habits that don't support good posture or health, aren't willing or able to adopt new ones, but still want relief from chronic discomfort, a weekly massage can help you feel better for a time. If your lifestyle includes daily stretching, exercise, and movement practices that support your goals on the table, and if you're goal is stasis, a massage every 3 to 4 weeks can support you in that.
How long is your body maintaining results from your sessions? After your massage, your chronic neck and shoulder pain is...absent. For how long? If you're scheduling massage sessions every 3-4 weeks, but your neck pain is returning at week 2, it's a great idea to book several sessions closer together and ask your therapist for between-session tips (stretches and exercises) to help you maintain that pain-free state for longer and longer periods. You'll be re-training your body into a "new normal" while learning quick and easy ways to help yourself feel better on your own at home. Your body will respond and thank you for it. Don't spend 2 weeks in pain!
